Social Work in Hospice & Palliative Care

One of the most difficult jobs in social work is in hospice and palliative care. Patients in hospice or palliative care are dying which makes dealing with them a real challenge. All that the social worker can do is help to make sure that they are as comfortable as possible and that all of the arrangements are taken care of. This tends to make this kind of social work quite depressing. Nevertheless it is important work and it needs to be done.

The first role that a social worker will play when it comes to hospice and palliative care is to make sure that the patient is in the right hospice. There are several different hospices; they differ not only in quality but in their philosophy for dealing with dying patients. It is important to make sure that the patient is in the best possible situation for their needs. In a lot of cases cost will be the major factor in choosing a hospice but there are other factors that need to be taken into consideration as well. The social worker can be a huge help with this.

Once the patient is in the hospice the social worker will offer counseling to make sure that everybody knows what is about to happen. That will involve counseling both the patient and their family in the course that the illness will take and what they should expect. The counselor will also do everything that they can to make sure that the patient is comfortable and that the family can spend as much time as possible with them. Knowing what is going to happen is usually the best way to help people get through the experience.

Many people who are in a hospice actually have no family to come and visit them, for these people the social worker will be even more important. Nobody wants to be alone in the last days of their life but that is exactly what happens to many people who have no family to come and visit them. In many cases the social worker will be their only source of support their only company.

One of the most important parts of a social worker in a hospice is to help to make the arrangements for after the patient dies. There are lots of details that need to be worked out when somebody dies. There is paperwork that needs to be filled out, funeral arrangements need to be made. There is even the practical detail of getting the body to the funeral home. In most cases people are not really prepared for all of the details that need to be taken care of. Since most people aren't prepared for death that means that their loved ones need to take care of the details at a very difficult time. A social worker can help to guide people through all of the details that come up when somebody dies.
